Stone age is to fire as new age to electricity. The morning today begins with the alarm clock, the electronic brushes making an early morning easier and water heaters turning the languid bath in a luscious spa. You throw your clothes in a fully automatic washer and dryer and ready for pulling the milk can from your new three-door defrost refrigerator. The oven, the toaster, the microwave and the coffee maker are all geared up to serve the fabulous feast you can ever imagine to gobble without a disagreement which comes complimentary when you play ‘Whodunnit’ instead of employing euphoric electric servants. Timeless and tidy appliances have chopped off those elaborate meal deals allowing you to drive down to your favorite beach house.

With our lives driving down the fast tracks, who has time to scrub and brush those small household chores? The elegant woman with the pearl necklace and high heels is all appreciative of the dishwasher and the vacuum cleaners, if not the husbands. You never imagined fun in the sun until air conditioners came into being. A prerequisite to the contemporary lifestyles appliances are a necessity than a luxury. The key to be a super mom today is to watch wonder kid and Electric house.

The Sunday newspaper, cricket in the afternoon with the smart kids and salsa in the evening to please your wife, would only be an unrealistic dream if the plug and play technology wasn’t invented. You don’t have to run to the employment bureaus anymore for the domestic help, just prepare yourself to pay the electricity bills and whoa! Life is bliss. Say goodbye to those muscle pulls, backaches, twisted necks and tired arms; enjoy the new taste of life. Though the appliances do it all for us (leaving us obese coupled with lung problems due to carbon monoxide released by them), aren’t we hungry for more?

Many people have trouble purchasing an air conditioning. Many times we have a habit of just focusing on the brand names of the air conditioner. And decide which one is better, but there are more things that you should look at besides the name.

You should focus more on the size and installation of your air conditioner, rather then a high end air conditioning. Because the big factor is the installation, if it is not installed properly you can face more problems later on.

One good reason the have properly sized ac system is humidity control. When it operates the evaporator coil temperature is below the dew point temperature. The result of this is that the moisture condensing on the evaporator reduces the moisture in the air. This would mean a decrease in the humidity. This process cannot happen with an oversized ac, the run cycle on them are too short for this to happen. So keep that in mind when you’re shopping around.

Also maintaining and repairing an over sized ac can cost you much more. The compressor for example, over time will wear out and you will need to get it replaced. If your ac turns on and off for 4 or 5 times in an hour instead of the normal 2 or3. It will wear out your compressor. There are many other factors to look out for when shopping around for an air conditioning unit so be sure to do some research and not be afraid to ask questions.

But at least you know it’s not all in the name. Be sure to pay the extra money and get the air conditioner installed properly, because that is the main thing. Sure there are other aspects, but not everyone has the budget for the air conditioner with better features. So getting it installed properly will save you quite a bit of money down the road.

Because of this, you stop day dream and think that you will never have a beautiful home of your own. This is wrong! Unless you need the solid mahogany dinning table and velvet drapes currently featured in ‘Beautiful Homes’ you can create a beautiful home from discount, outlet and grocery superstores. Add in a few personal details with treasured heirlooms, artwork or flea market finds and you can get the designer look you want, for less.

Outlets: Do not bypass outlets for fantastic discounts on the ‘real-deal’. Prices are slashed by 50% or more – meaning you can get the name without the cost. Outlets are especially great for the little designer luxuries like pillows, vases and linens that set the mood. It’s amazing what a little pizzazz front-and-center can do to distract from no-name furnishings – even with your most critical guests.

Other outlets offer genuine, designer furnishings at huge discounts because they are from a discontinued line or were floor models. You might be surprised what you can afford at these outlets.

Discount Stores: Don’t knock it – the ready-to-assemble (RTA) furnishing commonly available in discount stores is vastly improved from what was available even 2 or 3 years ago. Consumer demand has created a market for high quality furnishings with lower costs. The only way to fill the need was to improve the materials and customize the look. You will now find RTA furnishings that rival traditional furnishings for quality and looks, at a much lower price. You can check out Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target to see the latest decor ready-to-go.

Grocery Stores/ Do-It-Yourself Stores: While checking out the cleaners in aisle 3 you may just pass the latest designer-look living room set in aisle 2. Yes, even big name grocery stores and Do-It-Yourself stores are providing the consumer with their own lines of furnishings – and demand is high.

Following the lead of discount merchandisers, RTA furniture is now being offered through other channels – including grocery chains. You just never know when the urge to redecorate will strike!

Now you know how to decorate your home at low cost. Your dream now can come true! Take some of these basic pieces, add some designer accessories, complete with some personal touches and artwork and you have a look that will stand up to the toughest critic.

Here’s a primer on the styles mentioned in the ads.

Home Styles

What’s the difference between a Tudor and Colonial style? What about a Colonial and Dutch Colonial? Read on to find out.

“Colonial,” “Georgian,” or “Federal” style

Terms used when talking about a two (could be 3 or two and one half) story house that is very symmetrical. The front door is in the center of the house. There are an equal number of windows on each side. There is an upstairs window over each downstairs window and over the front door. There are usually exterior shutters at the windows. (Note: The houses which inspired this very traditional style were built in the early days of our country and are seen mostly in the East.)

“Tudor” style

A style of home that borrows from merry old England. It typically has exposed heavy dark beams. Some of the beams are perpendicular, some horizontal, and some at a forty five degree angle. The exterior walls are usually stucco between the beams. The lower story is usually of brick or stone. The upper story often has sections that are cantilevered out over the lower story. Box bay windows and diamond shaped panes are frequent features as are large chimneys.

“Dutch Colonial” style

Very much like colonial style except that the roof is a gambrel roof. That is, it’s shaped like most folks think of a barn roof. It slopes down from a center ridge line and then, usually a little more than half way to the edge, the angle of the slope becomes sharper creating a second ridge at the front and back where the angle changes.

“Spanish,” “Mexican,” “Hacienda” style

Seen mostly in the South and West of our country, this style incorporates stucco or adobe type bricks and red half round roof tiles. These homes are often built in a “U” shape with the walls of the house extended to enclose the “U.” This design device can give a pleasant feeling of privacy to outdoor areas. Door and window openings with curved tops and wrought iron grilles, door hinges, and handles are frequent features.

Summary

When looking at homes, you’ll find particular styles appeal to you. Once you identify the styles, you can narrow your search for the perfect home.

It is even harder to decorate well when you realize how much it matters to decorate your space in ways that reflect you. I have recently been busy redecorating my office. It was very important for me that my office reflect who I am and that it be a comfortable environment for writing in. I chose, after much deliberation, to go with a Japanese art theme for my office.

I have always loved Japanese art, but it seems to be getting more popular and hence more widely available in the past few years. There is something about the look and feel of Japanese art that I love, so I figured it would be an excellent way to decorate a special space that I use for doing endless hours of valuable writing. I knew that I needed to be intentional about the way I decorated my office. I am very aware of my environment and so I know that I need to decorate and create my work environment with care. I write much better when I am inspired by my surroundings, and I know that Japanese art is very inspiring.

I began searching for Japanese art in thirft shops and in unique art shops. Anyone who is interested in Japanese art for their home or office could start on the internet by searching for Japanese art. See if there are any speciality shops or chain dealers in your area and then make a visit. While you can purchase great pieces of Japanese art off the internet, it is sometimes hard to really get a feel for the look and color scheme of an art piece without seeing it face to face. So don’t hesitate to be picky and to search around for Japanese art pieces that fit your style and needs. There are varying kinds and styles of Japanese art that can be purchased, so see what you like first.

My love for Japanese art hinges on their great use of color. I am very much affected by color, so I love the bold and brilliant hues that most Japanese art is comprised of. I started my search for Japanese art by choosing a color scheme that I wanted to decorate with and then I chose pieces according to that scheme.

I am not sorry that I chose Japanese art to be the theme of my office decor. In fact, I love what I chose. It inspires me to work hard and to create in much the same way that the Japanese have created such great Japanese art.

When selecting carpet, one must consider many aesthetic as well as technical issues; and with over one hundred thousand styles and colors released by manufacturers every year, selecting the carpet that matches your needs can be a daunting task.

Carpet is available in a myriad of textures, constructions, colors and designs, opening the doors to countless interior design possibilities. The combination of color and texture, will compliment the décor of both casual and formal environments, while bringing continuity to the overall design of the rooms.

The most important factor to consider when shopping for carpet is the amount of foot traffic prevalent in the area in which the carpet is to be installed as well as the areas intended use. Carpet construction and texture are the key aspects when selecting a carpet for a specified area and use.

Polyester, nylon and olefin are the most widely used fibers in the manufacture of carpet, each displaying certain inherent characteristics which lend themselves well to distinct applications. Although the most expensive of the fibers, nylon is the softest and most resilient, making it suitable for all rooms in your home, including high traffic areas.

Polyester is less resilient than nylon, but is more cost effective and offers a higher level of stain resistance, making it an attractive option for areas such as bedrooms and dining rooms that are not subject to high foot traffic.

Olefin fibers are solution dyed, resulting in a highly stain resistant carpet that can be cleaned using a bleach and water solution, without the loss of color. Unlike the other fibers, olefin is fade, mold and mildew resistant, resulting in a carpet that performs well in indoor/outdoor areas. Olefin is however not very resilient and therefore should only be considered in a berber construction.

Carpets are available in either a berber or plush construction. Berber carpets are constructed with a continuous level loop, while a plush carpet is constructed of loops that have been sheered, resulting in the strands standing upright.

Berber carpets do not matt and crush, due to their level loop construction; however they are harder underfoot, uncomfortable to sit or lye on, and can be damaged by pets with long nails. Berbers are very well suited to high traffic areas such as walk ways, living rooms and entrance halls, however their hard texture makes them a less attractive option for bedrooms.

Plush carpets are softer to walk on and offer better sound and thermal insulation, however they tend to matt and crush when subjected to heavy foot traffic. The use of a nylon fiber coupled with a tight low pile construction will limit the matting and crushing, due to the resiliency nature of the nylon fiber and the additional support gained from a tight construction.

Carpet warranties range from 5 to 30 years, and as general rule, do not cover stairs and are not transferable. Most warranties require the installation of new carpet padding at the time of installation in order for the warranty to be valid.

Following the manufacturers maintenance instructions and using only approved cleaning chemicals will ensure that your carpet will perform for years and years.

Stainless steel is made from iron and other metals, which is strong and resists against wear and tear. It is inexpensive, long lasting and is most popular in North America. The metals used in stainless steel or iron, may produce health effects such as iron, nickel and chromium.

Ceramic pottery, enamel or glass cookware is easily cleaned and can be heated to fairly high temperatures. Ceramic is glazed; similar glazes are applied to metals to make enamelware. These glazes, a form of glass, resist wear and corrosion.

For cooking and storing food, plastic is lightweight and nearly unbreakable. Many containers have been made for use in microwave ovens, where metal cookware is not suitable.

Stainless steel cookware should be washed in hot, soapy water or a warm ammonia and water solution, thoroughly rinsed and immediately dried to avoid water spots. Use mild, stainless steel cleaners or light scouring with a plastic or stainless steel scouring pad to remove most stains; don’t use steel wool, chlorine bleach or alcohol

Cast iron cookware is usually pre-seasoned coated with unsalted fat and heated to prevent rusting, unless porcelain coated. It should be washed in warm, sudsy water and frequently treated by coating the cast iron interior surface with unsalted shortening, left until its next use, and then wiped out. To re-season, scour the pan completely, rinse and dry; then coat the inside with unsalted fat and leave in moderate oven for two hours. Remove and wipe off excess grease.

To remove copper cookware discoloration, use commercial cleaner or a mixture of flour, salt, lemon juice and ammonia applied before regular washing. Wash chrome cookware with warm water and soap or detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

One of the first considerations in choosing a shower enclosure is to decide if you want a framed or frameless shower door. Framed shower doors are made of thiner, less expensive glass, and so are more economical. Frameless shower doors are made of thicker glass which does not need the support of a frame, but they are more expensive.

Frameless shower doors offer several advantages. Most notably, with no metal frame, there are fewer places to trap water and for mold and mildew to grow. Another consideration is appearance. Frameless shower doors have a sleek, refined look that framed doors lack.

As mentioned before, price is a factor, so you will have to choose which style of shower enclosure you prefer. Only you can decide if the advantages of a frameless shower enclosure are worth the extra price.

Another factor to consider when choosing a shower enclosure is the obscurity level of the glass. Most people prefer glass that has been obscured by clouding or patterns in the glass. This gives one an added degree of privacy when showering. However, you may want a clear glass construction, if you had, for example, a view of the mountains out your window, and you wanted to enjoy it while you were showering.

If you choose to get a framed shower enclosure design, you’ll have to choose a finish for the metal, also. Generally, you should have the finish of the metal in your shower enclosure match the fixtures in your bathroom. Remember that with most shower enclosures, the metal finish will have nothing to do with what metal the product is constructed with.

Visual design is another factor to consider when choosing a shower enclosure. Nowadays, you can choose from all kinds of unusual designs, including circular shower enclosures, etc. It’s up to you how you want your bathroom to look!

Then you probably need some good bar stools? Don’t know what to buy? Read the guidelines below and stop the confusion.

1. Consider The Height

You should consider the height of your counter or bar when buying bar stools. Ideally, there should be 10-12 inches between your bar stool seat and the top of your counter or bar. For example, if you have a 36 inch counter or bar then you will need a 24 or 25 inch seat height bar stool. If you have a 48 inch high counter or bar then you should buy a 36 inch tall bar stool. If the height and size of your bar or counter is unique you can have a bar stool custom made for it. At an additional cost, some manufacturers will cut the legs of available bar stools to accommodate the height of any bar or counter. For example if you need a bar stool that is 27 inches in height, then buy one that is 30 inches high or more and have it cut to 27 inch size.

2. Swivels

When it comes to swivels there are generally two types. And choosing one all depends on personal taste. The first is the regular swivel which provides 360 degree turning and works on most styles of bar stools. This is the only type that should be used on a backless swivel bar stool. The elderly, disabled and children would find it easy to get on and off this type of bar stool that‘s why it is ideal in the home. The second type of swivel is the memory swivel. This type of swivel has a spring loaded mechanism that allows the stool to return to the center position when the person sitting on it gets off, providing a neat look all the time. It also saves users from manually turning the stool to a central point. The memory swivel only turns approximately half way for people to get on and off it.

4. Backed Or Backless?

Keep in mind that backless type bar stools are designed for short duration sitting. These type of bar stools come in a variety of seat choices and is available in either wood or metal. There are generally three types of backless bar stools: the standard round seat which has a smooth surface, the saddle dish which conforms to the body surface for added comfort, and the round cushion which has a wood base and comes with a padded cushion in the fabric of your choice.

5. Style & Material

If you choose to buy bar stools with backs then you will also find a variety of styles and make from wood, metal and iron as well as the fashionable “stainless steel finish” which is chosen by most designers. Wooden bar stools with backs come in Arrow Back, Wheat Sheaf, High Spindle back, the low curved back and the low spindle back. Wrought iron bar stools on the other hand, come with “motif” backs with your choice of motif design to fit your decor and lifestyle. These type is ideal for restaurants and bars.

6. Arm Rests?

If you require a bar stool which provides total comfort then buy the type that has a back and an arm as well. The arms provide additional comfort while eating or drinking. The only disadvantage of these kind of bar stools is that they would require additional space at the counter or bar. When you do buy bar stools with arms then make sure that you consider turning space when installing them.

7. Buying Tips

- If you can, purchase bar stools in a store with good professional customer service people
- Buy bar stools that are backed by individual factory warranties for your own peace of mind
- Determine the number of bar stools you will need
- When choosing between metal or wood, take note of their differences. Wooden stools have a warmer feel while metal ones are usually contemporary

Kitchens are one of the most popular rooms in the home and probably the number one room where remodeling can add tremendous value to your property. House flippers will focus a large portion of their budget on the kitchen as it is the biggest draw for house shoppers. What if your kitchen is in need of a face lift but you don’t have the major budget of a seasoned house flipper? You can benefit from a strong first impression by simply refacing your kitchen cabinets.

Essentially this requires a redo of the front faces of the cabinets and the hardware. This includes the doors, drawer fronts, cabinet handles and the cabinet body fronts.

One of the most common methods (and probably the cheapest) is to repaint all cabinet surfaces and doors. This doesn’t have to be a time consuming process, usually you can accomplish the entire job in 2 or 3 days. It does make a bit of a mess so it’s advised that you do all the door and drawer painting outside or in a well ventilated area of your home. For the cabinet body fronts you’ll paint them where they stand so put up plastic sheeting over the doorways to prevent excess paint and fumes from leaking into other rooms of your house.

The other most popular method is to simply replace all the doors, drawers and hardware while leaving the cabinet bodies in place and either painting or refinishing those. This method allows you the fun and freedom of shopping for new cabinet doors but also saving hundreds or thousands of dollars over the price of entirely new cabinets.

Cabinet refacing also allows you a lot of creative freedom. Crafty individuals will often cut out the middle section of cabinet doors and replace them with all sorts of materials including punched copper, shiny objects between panes of glass, or even dried food materials in colorful arrangements. Simply using glass insets will provide a more open space visually, but be sure you’re on the neat side as visitors will see the entire contents of your cabinets!

Before starting your cabinet refacing project check out various kitchen remodeling photos on the internet and in your local home improvement stores. They will have hundreds of great ideas to suit any budget. Most of all, have fun and enjoy the pick-me-up!
